This particular project demonstrates another significant advantage of container-based accommodation: the potential to use vertical space.
Where a suitable site arrangement allows it, positioning an office above another container can create additional workspace without requiring another complete container footprint at ground level.
For a busy yard or industrial site, that can be commercially valuable. Ground-level space may be needed for vehicles, materials, plant, storage or day-to-day operations. Using the space above an existing container provides another way of approaching the requirement.
And creating the upper office is only part of the solution. People also need practical access to it.
Creating Safe, Practical Access to an Upper-Level Office
Once an office is positioned above ground level, the conversion has to be considered as part of the wider installation rather than simply as a container placed on top of another.
In this project, I T Williams fabricated an external steel staircase and landing to provide access to the upper office. The staircase incorporates steel handrails and contrasting stair nosings, while the landing provides a dedicated approach to the personnel door.
This demonstrates an important aspect of bespoke container work: the customer’s requirement may extend beyond the container itself.
For businesses considering a similar arrangement, the starting point should therefore be the complete requirement: where the office is needed, what sits beneath or alongside it, how people will access it and how the available site space is currently being used.
The suitability of any stacked arrangement will depend on the individual site, containers, foundations, loading and proposed installation. Those matters need to be properly assessed for the particular project rather than assuming that any container can simply be stacked and occupied.
That distinction is important. We don’t want to sell somebody a container office if what they actually need is a workable office solution for a particular site.
